Waste of milk and sugar turned into bioplastic

A research of the Brazilian Universidade Estadual Paulista, UNESP, wants to enable production of plastics from lactic acid extracted from waste of milk and sugar.

According to the director of the Biosciences Institute of UNESP, Jonas Contiero, the research objective is to develop a technology of obtaining lactic acid, both D and L isomers, to be employed in the polymerization of lactic acid. He explains that this polymerization, depending on the type of isomers, gives different characteristics to the bioplastic formed.
