USDA sees 2013/14 beet area down 2.4%


Sugar beet area in the United States is expected to be reduced in the 2013/14 crop, reaching 1.2011 million acres. A drop of 2.4% from 1.2301 million in 2012/13 and compared with 1.2328 million in 2011/12, the USDA said in its annual Prospective Plantings Report released on March 28.

In February the USDA said it was expecting a drop in beet plantings of as much as 9 percent.

Beets are responsible for almost three-fifths of the U.S. sugar crop.
