Ukraine – Farmers may reduce sugar beet area by 40%

Farmers may reconsider plans for sowing sugar beets in 2013 and reduce the area by 40% because of low sugar prices, the President of the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation, Leonid Kozachenko, said.

A meeting of the committee on agrarian policy and land relations in late February found that Ukraine’s sugar industry amassed huge losses in 2012/13, and projected a significant drop in the area under beet cultivation during 2013/14.
