Small Brazilian sugar mills will be closed or sold: association

Almost one fifth of sugarcane and ethanol processing plants in Brazil will be closed or be sold in the coming years due to financial problems, as the high production costs expel smaller and less competitive firms, said Monday the industry association Unica.

About 60 of the 330 mills will be sold or closed and 10 of these will no longer be operational for the 2013/14 crushing season which begins in April, Antonio de Padua Rodrigues, technical director of Unica said to Reuters.

He said the scenario could change if there is a significant change in market conditions or government regulations.
