Second-generation ethanol may available in the market in ten years

In ten years the second generation ethanol will be available at service stations in Brazil.The forecast is from Elba Bon biologist and Professor from the Department of Biochemistry, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).


According to the researcher, Brazil is already producing in the laboratory alcohol made from sugarcane bagasse and straw . In five years, will begin production of the demo called second-generation ethanol on an industrial scale, and in ten years the renewable fuel will be available at the pump , mixed with current first-generation ethanol (made from sugarcane juice ).

According to Bon, the technology that is being investigated for the extraction of second-generation ethanol “is coming to stay and will double the production of ethanol without increasing the planted area”, adding the waste straw from corn and wheat.
