The mills and distilleries in South-Central region of Brazil must process 550 million tons of sugar cane in the 2011/2012 season, down about 1.24% to 556.89 million tons (tonne) of the season 2010 / 2011, according to the first preview of Datagro Consulting, released on the Symposium Datagro / Udop in Araçatuba (SP). According to Plinio Nastari, president of the consulting, the severe drought in the second half of 2010, caused by La Niña, hindered the development of culture and will impact production.
According to Nastari, the weather condition during March and April should be fundamental to define what is the real prediction of crop processed by mills in 2011-2012. Thus, the harvest in the South-Central can vary by 15 million tons up or down. In the last harvest, drought dropped the initial forecasts, which ranged from 585 million to 595 million tons, for the final ground production close to 557 million tons in the South-Central.
