Indonesia’s sugar production is expected to fall to 2.3-2.4 million tonnes in 2016

The Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia expects sugar production to fall to 2.3 – 2.4 million tonnes this year, compared with estimated 2.5 million tons in April, due to a combination of climatic phenomena such as El Niño and La Niña, an official said on Wednesday.

The general director of state crops of the ministry, Gamal Nasir, said the country produced 2.48 million tons of sugar last year and the government aims to increase production to 2.95 million tons next year.

The original ministry target for sugar production this year was 2.9 million tons.
