First French beet test suggests low beet and sugar yields in 2012/13

The first French beet test of the 2012/13 season showed a combination of low beet yields and low sugar content resulting in the lowest theoretical sugar yield per ha at this time of the year in six years.

The test was carried out on July 30 and the French Sugar Producers Association SNFS said it showed a theoretical beet yield per ha of only 44.5 tonnes, down from last year’s 54.5 and also below the five-year average of 49.6. The sugar content of the crop was a similarly weak at 15.2%, down from last year’s 16.4% and also sharply below the five-year average of 16.5%.
