Drought affects sugar output in Honduras
The cane harvest in the south of Honduras began with the announcement that there will be a decrease in production due to the effects of climate change, because of the presence of “El Niño” that affected rainfall between May and September . The estimate is that production will reach 2.2 million quintals, down 0.3 million quintals compared to last year.
Sugar production is Honduras is 11,354,112 quintals of sugar, according to the Association of Sugar Producers of Honduras (APAH).
Production usually begins in late November and runs until April of the following year.
The estimate for this year is a harvest of one million tons of sugarcane compared with 1.5 million tons of cane last year.
