Cuba has 107 varieties of sugarcane

Cuba has 107 varieties of sugarcane occupying more than 560,000 hectares of land, mostly obtained by breeding programs, according to a study released by the country.

The inventory was conducted in order to “interpret the adaptability and effectiveness agribusiness product”, which for decades was considered the first economic sector of the island and is now going through a restructuring.

The theme of the varieties of sugarcane, seeds and methods of irrigation and drainage will be discussed in September at the 50th congress of the ATAC in Havana, with the participation of experts from countries like Germany, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Venezuela and Uruguay.
