Colombian sugar output could reach 2.32 million tonnes in 2016/17, says US official

Sugar production in Colombia is set to rise in the 2016/17 season to 2.32 million tons, down from an estimate of approximately 2.25 million tonnes in 2015/16, with production recovering due to El Niño, after excessive rains in 2011 and 2012, said on Wednesday the US agricultural official in the country.

According to the agency, the sugarcane productivity must also increase in 2015/16 due to improved weather conditions.

However, the country’s sugar exports in 2016/17 should total 703,000 tons, compared to 790 thousand tons estimated in the previous season, “with domestic demand continuing to absorb the production,” said the official.
