Colombia plant produces first liter of ethanol

Bioenergy, the biofuels subsidiary of Colombian national oil company Ecopetrol, produced the first liter of sugarcane ethanol from the El Alcavarán plant in the city of Puerto López, Meta department.

The plant will have a production capacity of 504,000l/d, Ecopetrol said in a statement.

The complex also includes a 35MW biomass-fired power plant, which will inject approximately 19MW into the national grid. The remainder will be used to power operations at the site.

The power plant will run on bagasse, a residual product of the sugarcane-crushing process.
