Biotechnology for sugarcane

A study by scientists associated with FAPESP Research Program on Bioenergy (BIOEN) confirmed that – for the first time in commercial varieties of cane sugar – the genes associated with sucrose content present changes according to the potential yield of the plant´s biomass.Published in the journal Plant Biotechnology Journal, the study had significant impact on the international scientific community.

The study talks about “energy cane” which does not necessarily have lots of sugar but a lot of biomass – which means a lot of productivity.
