Belgium’s second beet test shows strong sugar yield increase, but still below average

Belgium’s second beet test conducted on August 20 showed a rise in sugar content to near record levels due to very low rainfall over the past fortnight, which together with an improvement in beet yields resulted in a sugar yield increase over the past two weeks by an exceptional 2.5 tonnes per ha.

Sugar content reached 16.32%, above last year’s 16.13% and also above the five-year average of 15.77%. The sugar content level is the second highest over the past ten years and is only exceeded by 2009’s 17.66%.
