Barbados considers not exporting more sugar to the European market

Agriculture Minister of Barbados, David Estwick, said the country is considering not producing sugar for the European market because it is unprofitable for the Caribbean country.

According to Estwick, there is no point in producing sugar for about U.S. $ 2050 per ton, and then sell it to Europeans for 980 and said that this is the bad math they are not willing to support anymore.

“We will produce sugar for domestic consumption and regional demand, in the context of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, and review other value-added products” he emphasized, according to Prensa Latina.

He revealed that he also intends to change the way the sugar industry is managed .
