ASEAN will bring changes to the sugar industry in Asia

The sugar industry in Asia will go through some changes by 2015, when the free trade agreement under ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) goes into effect. Suhrid Patel LMC International’s representative, said that ASEAN countries are aiming to reduce tariffs on sugar from member states to low levels (0-5%) either by 2015 or 2018.

“In theory, ASEAN trade liberalisation creates an opportunity to export to the region. But there is clearly an opportunity for Thailand to divert a greater proportion of its exports to the ASEAN region at the expense of Brazil”, said Patel.
