Alagoas Creates Pioneer Environmental Management System

In 2002, the Guaxuma Mill, a member of the João Lyra Group in Coruripe in the state of Alagoas, became the first ISO 14001 certified sugarcane alcohol unit in the world. This internationally recognized norm establishes the requirements for setting up and operating an Environmental Management System (EMS).

The seal was granted by ABS Quality Evaluations, who took into consideration the mill’s selective waste collection, the creation of a biological laboratory for sugarcane borer control, residual recycling and a 50% reduction in the use of chemical fertilizers.

The João Lyra Group currently reserves over 10.5 thousand hectares, 8 thousand of which are in the state of Alagoas, for the Santa Tereza Ecological Sanctuary (Uruba Mill), the Capivara Refuge (Laginha Mill), and the Broad-snouted Caiman Sanctuary (Guaxuma Mill). The social-environmental investments in the five units of the group total US$2.5 million a year.

The environmental activities of the João Lyra Group began in the 90s. In 1996, they inaugurated a program called Let’s Protect Nature, which created a new model of company management. Care for the environment was gradually incorporated into industrial processes, with the adoption of EMS and CCQA (Environmental Quality Control Centers) norms of conduct.

Caeté Mill, headquarters of the Carlos Lyra Group, in São Miguel dos Campos, AL, is in the process of receiving their ISO 14001 certification. This seal proves that companies can be concerned about the environmental impact of their activities with no detriment to their profitability. As part of their EMS activities, Caeté Mill has planted 240 thousand native tree sprouts. Over 8.1 thousand hectares were set apart for permanent preservation.

The company also created two private reserves in Alagoas, with an IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) protocol. One of these is the largest reserve in the state, with an area of almost 1.4 thousand hectares. The other is larger than state capital Maceió, with an area of 449hectares. The João Lyra Group, with five industrial units, is the second largest sugar producer in Brazil, with an estimated yearly output of 827.4 million tons.
